This program reviewed the literature on indications and efficiency of Venus Thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis. Dr. Berkowitz described the six year results of the program at St. David’s HealthCare showing a 69% reduction in hospital acquired Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE), and substantial cost savings.
Dr. Berkowitz also reviewed national best practices regarding:
- Development of a comprehensive VTE Program
- Early prophylaxis in the Emergency Department
- Extended prophylaxis post hospital discharge
