Medicare Consumers

As a right of passage, once an adult turns 65 years of age, they become eligible for the Medicare program. KFMC is the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) authorized by the Medicare program to review medical services provided to Medicare consumers in the state of Kansas. It is our job to ensure that Kansas Medicare beneficiaries are aware of their rights under the Medicare program. We also work with hospitals, physicians' offices, nursing homes, home health agencies, hospices and other healthcare providers in Kansas to ensure the quality of health care for Kansas older adults.

In this role, we strive to:

We have been working in this role for over 35 years. KFMC offers a toll-free information line for all of Kansas Medicare beneficiaries and their family members. The purpose of the information line is to provide answers to questions about beneficiary rights and responsibilities, to gather information regarding complaint issues, and to provide appropriate contact information to other Kansas agencies as needed.. KFMC also stresses the importance of taking advantage of preventive care such as getting annual mammograms, and keeping influenza and pneumonia vaccinations up to date. The toll-free number is (800) 432-0407 and operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Upon request, KFMC reviews medical records for quality of care of services provided to Medicare consumers. Requests for this review usually come from the Medicare beneficiary or their representative. This review may be performed for care received in a variety of settings, including acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, physicians' offices, ambulatory surgery centers, home health agencies, and hospices. If you have questions related to quality of care you've received from a Medicare provider, please call us at (800) 432-0407. For those adults who turn 65 years of age this year, welcome to Medicare! KFMC is here to assist you. Here's to your good health.
